I'm relieved to see you're still there. Hopefully it won't get to you. A college friend of mine lives in San Diego on Allied Road. The zip code is 92120. Do you know if that's in the evacuation area?

I almost said I can't imagine dealing with this but I can. Several years ago there were some folks who enjoyed setting fires on the hillside "to watch it burn" while we were trying to build our house. Scott had to go fight several and I helped with one of them. 2 am, pitch black, trying to rake up the leaves and make a fire break. We found out later we had done a lot of it wrong, but we saved the house. This happened about 3 years in a row, and the following October Scott happened to mention it to someone in the neighborhood, who replied, "Oh, you don't need to worry about that anymore. That was my cousins and they moved away." Gee, thanks for turning them in. Take care and here's hoping for rain soon.

I hope you and your family are doing okay. It looks pretty scary from clear across the country. Stay safe!

Okay, so just how close do you have to be to the fire before evacuation? Do your nose hairs have to be singed? On your blog and others who haven't been evacuated, the pictures look awfully close and frightening.

Janet - I'm sorry I don't know whether the Allied Road area of San Diego was evacuated. SignOnSanDiego(dot)com is the San Diego Union-Tribune's site and is the best source I have found for information like that.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the fires set near your home site. It's a horrible feeling to see it coming toward you and not being sure it will stop. To know someone did it intentionally is even worse.

Glad to hear those guys are gone. Wish their cousin would have turned them in.

Marine Wife -- Thanks, we're doing well. Taking a little vacation from the smoke and enjoying the fresh mountain air.

The evacuation calls are based on several factors, some are precautionary based on the path the fires are be likely to take, others are last minute. Local newscasts have been asking people to basically exercise common sense and if they see smoke or fire take it upon themselves to evacuate or at least be prepared to evacuate.

Growing up in Tornado Alley, I learned early on to walk away from my house knowing it may not be there when I return. It doesn't make it easy, but it puts it in perspective. Call me a fire chicken, but I don't wait for anyone to tell me to evacuate. There will be no singing of my nose airs, if I can help it.

I call that being practical! Not a chicken!
